The concerto was written in 1999 in response to a commission from James Gourlay, who gave the world premiere at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, 2000 with the RNCM Concert Band conducted by John Reynolds.
There are four movements played without a break:
1. Into the Unknown
2. Hazards
3. Reflections
4. Into the Light
