This is a set of variations for chamber orchestra of a French folk song called ’Branle Carré’. The piece was originally intended to be played on the hurdy-gurdy. The melody was discovered in the book ’Folk and Traditional Music of the Western Continents’ by Bruno Nettl. The orchestration is for flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, horn, percussion, harp and solo string quintet.
