In the flags by the river's brink

Additional Information

In the flags by the river's brink is written for 2 flutes, viola and cello.

The artefacts I have chosen to explore in this piece are: the biblical text of the story of Moses; Debussy's Syrinx for solo flute and Ancient Greek modes.

It is inspired by biblical story of Moses, a favourite story of my father's. It is also inspired by my studies of Debussy and in particular Syrinx for unaccompanied flute, a piece with which I am very familiar and have played for many years. In this piece, I draw upon my studies of the Ancient Greek Modes, particularly the Phrygian mode, which is the basis for this piece.

This piece explores voice and reflection in its many forms.

There are seven short connected movements with an overarching structure of ABACABA form. Each repetition of A is elaborated, returning to the simple opening form for the final repetition.
