Sanctum - a private place from which most people are excluded.
A refuge, retreat, hideout.
I devised Sanctum for the pianist Philip Thomas to perform as part of a Platform 4 collaboration in 2013. I have often been transfixed watching how carefully and beautifully Philip performs extremely quiet music such as Feldman’s piano pieces. For me, the visual aspect of musical performance is often as engaging as the resulting sound and this piece pays homage to the act of playing the piano and also questions our expectations of what we will hear when presented with a performance on a musical instrument.
