Additional Information
Coquette for solo flute ‘an exercise in melodic ultra-expression’ is a portrait of a sensuous, capricious, flirtatious character, whose ever-changing moods range from yearning self-expression to hysterical agitation.
‘Coquette’ consists of an introductory motif with free extensions and arabesque-like flourishes; an ornate bel canto melody marked arioso (bar 43); and an impetuoso section consisting of runs, leaps and quick-tongued notes (bars 52 and 104). ‘Coquette’ has the quality of an improvisation, but its structure requires that tempi and expression marks be strictly observed so that circularity prevails.
‘Coquette’ can be performed to the accompaniment of a dancer or mime whose movements and gestures end in narcissistic pathos, as the work’s closing bars suggest.
‘Coquette’ was featured at the ISCM World Music Days 2018 Beijing.
The work's original title was 'Scena for flute'. It was composed in Walton on Thames, Surrey in 1974.
