This short piece for large orchestra is conceived as an 'additional' Planet, to go alongside and as a tribute to Holst's great orchestral masterpiece. The idea was suggested to me by the 9 year old son of a friend, when we went to hear 'The Planets' at the Proms, and he pointed out that Earth was a planet too, and ought to have a piece about it. So I said I'd write one - and I did!
The piece is in the nature of a 'fly-by', approaching Earth from a distance, then seeing it in all its glory close-up, when the organ comes it, then sailing off into the depths of space again.
