Additional Information
I have recently become very engaged with the idea of writing music which will introduce younger players, inexperienced in the music of our time, to a contemporary musical language and modern performing techniques. My 18th string quartet, ‘Up Above the World’ (2018), did this very successfully for a group of young Cork players and I wished to continue this valuable work by writing for a slightly older, more advanced group of players. Cork city itself inspired the ideas I explored – the Shandon Bells gave rise to music based on natural and artificial (bell-like) harmonics, irregular rhythms and unbalanced counterpoint; the river Lee’s tendency to flood inspired music based on (gradually rising) chordal playing, extremes of dynamic and of density, challenges in intonation; Christchurch and its history inspired music of great delicacy, as if heard through the distant centuries, transparent playing with demands on stamina and bow technique.
