Biography
Peter is a British orchestral, choral and instrumental composer. His music is colourful and dynamic – contrasting big dramatic sounds with silences, and dense teeming textures with stillness and simplicity. His style blends traditional techniques and forms of expression with contemporary gestures and structures. His works have been performed by many including the BBC Singers - to critical acclaim, The Orlando Consort, The Goldberg Ensemble, The Endymion Ensemble and also broadcast on BBC 's Hear and Now.
In the early 2000s Peter took the radical decision to put his status as an emerging composer on hold because his style was undergoing a fundamental change. He needed space to find a way to re-embrace styles, idioms and gestures from past traditions. The result for Peter was life-changing, giving him a new confidence in his work’s integrity and more license to express freely, unhindered by expectation. You can hear the result of this fascinating journey by comparing Pattern Sonata (1994) with Roaring Meg (2019).
Peter's latest work Symphony of Mosaics, completed in 2026, is a 5 movement orchestral exploration of mosaic structure and colour. It is a technique he developed as an extension of block technique first present in his earlier symphonic scherzo Streaming2 (2000). It comprises the following 5 movements:
I: Shards
II: Fragmentum
III: Funky Poly
IV: Musivum
V: Funky Tessera
