Biography
Yu Hng is an award-winning Singaporean composer whose music was performed in 18 countries across Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. His pieces bridges early music with contemporary soundscapes, weaving liturgical and folk traditions into pieces sensitive to historical inheritance. He currently shuttles between the UK and Singapore for his musical engagements.
His works were described as "an almost dreamlike experience" (The Trombonist, summer 2025 issue), "full of clever concepts in structure and technique" (trans. Lianhe Zaobao, 29th Oct 2020) with his Cello Sonata described as "a beautiful addition to the cello repertoire... one bound to enter the canon" (Brian Patrick Bromberg, cellist, 2023 review).
Over the past 5 years, his music had been performed at concert spaces such as the Dartington Festival (UK), International Viola d'amore Congress (Italy), the UNESCO site of Schokland (Netherlands), the Esplanade (Singapore), Asian Composers League Festival (Japan), CEME New Music Festival (Israel), Bled Contemporary Music Festival (Slovenia), VIPA Festival (Spain), the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (UK), among others.
He has also written music for ensembles, performers and organizations such as: the Fretwork Viol Consort, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, CoMA, Mivos Quartet, Black Pencil Ensemble, .abeceda New Music Ensemble, Wessex Baroque Collective, Deus Ex Musica, Meitar Ensemble, Lontano Ensemble, CHROMA, Sopriola, Hill Quartet, Sackbut Frenzy, Arquia Duo, George Fu, See Ning Hui, Brian Patrick Bromberg and Juan Aguilera Cerezo, among others. His music is published or featured by the Composers Society of Singapore, NIBIUS Records (Spain), and CoMA (UK).
He read his Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music under Morgan Hayes, supported by the Countess of Munster Trust. Previously he studied at King's College London with Edward Nesbit, achieving the Purcell Prize in Music. Other teachers include Hans Abrahamsen, Phoon Yew Tien, Eleanor Alberga OBE, Nicola Lefanu, and Tansy Davies, among others.
