Join us on Wednesday 28 February at 19.00 GMT for the premiere of you go, once before, a new work by Sara Rahman, commissioned in partnership with Heritage Quay for the British Music Collection Beyond the Edge open call.
you go, once before was written for voice and cello. It was recorded, and interpreted by Sara Rahman combining field recordings and electronics. To accompany the piece is a visual essay drawing from archival footage from Huddersfield sound-system culture, landscape shots of the surrounding towns and archival footage from Palestinian and Lebanese films. By the way of music and visual essay, Sara wishes to tell a story of hope and the importance of community and land. The video was shot and beautifully pieced together in collaboration with Jhenelle White.
Beyond the Edge is an open call run by the British Music Collection in partnership with Heritage Quay, an archives and records management centre at Huddersfield University. The selected composer was given the opportunity to explore the British Music Collection's physical archive based at Heritage Quay, and produce a new sonic work in response to their findings. A celebration of the history of the British Music Collection and Sound and Music's founder organisations, the project runs alongside Heritage Quay's Cutting Edge exhibition, which focuses on New Music in the 20th Century.
The premiere of you go, once before will be shown on YouTube on Wednesday 28 January at 19.00 GMT. You'll be able to watch the video here (click "Notify me" to stay updated).
