María Mónica Gutiérrez, known as Montañera (Mountainess), has established herself as one of the most intense and unique voices hailing from Colombia. Her latest solo album A Flor De Piel was released in November of 2023 via the Austin, Tx-based label, Western Vinyl, with the support from Help Musicians Foundation. It has received glowing reviews from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Iggy Pop (BBC Radio), David Byrne, amongst many others.  

Her previous solo albums Encarnación (2017) and Salvadora (2020) have both received Honourable Mention by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, and she is a Marca Colombia Artist. With 9 albums in tow, the London-based singer/songwriter has a thirteen-year trajectory with Montañera (Electronic/Folk/Ambient) & her bands: Suricato (New Colombian Music/Jazz), and Ságan (Cosmo-natural Pop.) 

Her music has taken her throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America. She has also performed on stages as important as the Smithsonian Museum, the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), KEXP (Seattle), SXSW (Austin), Lollapalooza, Festival Estéreo Picnic (Colombia), MaMA Festival (Paris), BIME music market (Spain) and tour in Portugal. Her music has appeared in multiple Netflix series. As a soloist, she has performed in London’s Jazz Café, St. Pancras Old Church, Electric Brixton, MOTH Club, Colombian Embassy, Brian Eno’s studio, Lafayette, Village Underground as part of La Linea Festival, Southbank Centre, Rally Festival, WOMAD, Latinx Takeover at the V&A Museum, Alexandra Palace Theatre as part of Future Sound Festival and recorded at Abbey Road Studios

She has supported artists such as Ana Tijoux, Aterciopelados, iLe, Kevin Johansen and Silvana Estrada. Montañera is currently developing her upcoming album, set for release in 2026, and gratefully acknowledges the support of the PRS Foundation.  She is very passionate about how sound can help us connect with the inner and outer worlds for individual and collective healing, as seen in her participatory performance and workshop 'Circling Voices'. Her signature workshop has been presented at museums such as the V&A Museum, universities such as UCL and SOAS, and festivals such as La Linea and WOMAD.
