Then is a one movement work for string orchestra with two viola soloists. It was composed in April 2025. Then has a strong feeling of narrative and the soloists are in dialogue with the orchestra throughout. Joanna says: “I chose to compose for viola because I felt that its unique sound would be ideal to express the sense of vulnerability in the music.The title - Then - is deliberately open to encourage performers, and listeners, to imagine that the story in the music is their own."
