Yu Hng Ng

Biography

Yu Hng is a UK-based Singaporean composer. His interests include bridging early music with contemporary classical music, the weaving of liturgical and folk traditions into his compositions, and seeking an inclusive approach to composition that is sensitive to historic inheritance. 

His works are performed in 16 countries across Europe, Asia and North America, in venues such as the Dartington Festival (UK), the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the UNESCO Heritage Site of Schokland (Netherlands), the Esplanade (Singapore), New Music Days Festival (Switzerland),  Festival International de Guitare en Béarn des Gaves (France), Miyoshimachi Cultural Center (Japan), CEME New Music Festival (Israel), Valencia International Performing Arts Festival (Spain), among others, with performances by the Mivos Quartet, Contemporary Music for All (CoMA), Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Black Pencil Ensemble, Lontano, Meitar Ensemble, Fretwork Viol Consort, CHROMA, Sopriola, Hill Quartet, George Fu, Richard Uttley and Juan Aguilera Cerezo among others. 

Recently, he was a winner of the Idiosyncrasies 2024 Prize for string quartet (United States), and his trio Speak-Un-Listen had multiple performances on tour with British duo Sopriola in 2024, ending at the International Viola d'amore Congress (Palermo, Italy). His music is published by NIBIUS Records (Spain) and CoMA (UK). He is also a member of the Composers Society of Singapore (CSS). 

He read his Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music with Morgan Hayes, supported by the Countess of Munster Trust. Previously, he studied at King’s College London with Edward Nesbit, achieving the Purcell Prize in Music. Other teachers include Hans Abrahamsen, Nicola Lefanu, Eleanor Alberga OBE, Mr Phoon Yew Tien, Philip Cashian and Tansy Davies among others.
